Heavy Duty Polythene Bags: Stock Up, or Go Bespoke?

When you need heavy duty polythene bags, should you just stock up on a standard size, or go down the custom route? It’s a fair question – but both approaches have their place. It’s all about knowing your product, your needs, and the advantages versus the limitations of each.

Readymade bags are brilliant for certain situations. But if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that standard, stock polythene bags aren’t quite cutting it for you. Maybe it’s too wide, maybe it’s too thin – maybe it’s just not heavy duty enough for what you’re putting inside.

At NPF Packaging, we don’t do stock bags. We’re a manufacturer, and everything we make is made to order. That means we’re firmly in the bespoke camp, but we’re not going to pretend readymade bags are useless! They’re not at all, otherwise there wouldn’t be a market for them.

So, let’s look at both options, so you can make the right call for your business.

The case for stock heavy duty polythene bags

Sometimes you just need a bag – and you need it now. Readymade heavy duty polythene bags are available from all sorts of suppliers with speedy delivery, and that speed and convenience is unmatched.

Ease of ordering

With readymade bags, there’s no back and forth – you find a supplier, you check the dimensions and gauge, you place an order. It’s simple. You don’t need to think about polymer blends, additive packages, or custom dimensions. You just pick from a list, set the quantity, and click buy.

For businesses that have very simple, non-critical packaging requirements, this is the easiest path into packaging. There’s no learning curve and no minimum order quantity to worry about.

Repeat orders

Once you’ve found a readymade bag that works, you can order the same thing again and again. The specifications are fixed, so you know exactly what you’re getting. That’s good if your product doesn’t change and your volume is relatively low.

But then again – you’ll still get this with a custom bag, as your packaging company will keep your orders on file for repeat manufacture (with the added benefit of being able to make tweaks as you see fit).

Cost

Readymade bags are often cheaper per unit, at least at low volumes. That’s because the supplier is manufacturing in bulk and spreading the tooling and setup costs across (literally) tonnes of bags. You’re not paying for anything custom, so you’re not paying for the time and expertise that goes into a bespoke project.

The case against stock polythene bags

Readymade bags have some major limitations if your needs are more specific.

  1. You’re stuck with the sizes and gauges that the supplier has chosen to stock. If your product doesn’t quite fit those dimensions, you’re either over-bagging (wasting material and money) or under-bagging (risking failures)
  2. You can’t specify the polymer blend, so you can’t optimise for puncture resistance, UV protection, or cold resistance
  3. You can’t add custom or compliant colour-coding or printing
  4. You can’t get the traceability that some industries (such as medical) need

For simple, low risk, low volume applications – none of that really matters. But for anything more demanding, stock bags are a huge compromise that bigger operations shouldn’t be making.

The case for custom heavy duty polythene bags

At NPF Packaging, everything we make is custom. We manufacture heavy duty polythene bags to exact specifications, and we do it because that’s what our customers need. Here’s why bespoke is worth considering.

Fit and performance

A custom bag is made to fit your product – not the other way around. That means the dimensions are right, the gauge is right, and the bag performs exactly as you need it to. No wasted material, no gaps, no risk of the bag being too weak for the load.

We can manufacture bags in any width from just 20mm, in thicknesses from 32 gauge all the way up to 1200 gauge, and in LDPE or MDPE blends. Virgin and recycled content can be blended to any degree, and additives can be used to enhance performance (more on that later).

That’s a huge range – and it means we can match the bag to the job precisely. If you’re bagging bolts, we can make a small, tough bag that handles the weight without stretching. If you’re bagging aggregates, we can make a large gusseted bag that resists punctures and tears. If you’re bagging industrial components, we can go super heavy duty and add extra puncture resistance.

Custom gauge and weight saving

A bespoke bag doesn’t have to be thicker than a readymade one – in fact, it can often be thinner, because it’s optimised for the application.

If you’re currently using a stock 500 gauge bag because that’s the closest match available, but your product would be perfectly safe in a 400 gauge bag, you’re paying for material you don’t need. You’re also shipping heavier bags, which costs more and has a bigger environmental footprint.

Learn more about polythene thickness

By specifying a custom gauge, you can dial in exactly the right thickness for your product. That saves money, reduces waste, and can improve performance if the thinner material is more flexible and less prone to cracking.

Print and colour

Custom bags can be printed and coloured to your branding or compliance needs. That means your logo, your instructions, your warnings, or your batch codes can be printed directly onto the bag. No labels, no stickers – no extra processes.

You can colour-code bags by product line, by hazard type, or by destination. You can use white polythene for reflectivity and print clarity, or black polythene bags for light-sensitive contents. You can even choose your preferred opacity.

For food applications, you can specify virgin polymers and blue colour for detectability, and for medical applications, you can specify medical grade polythene and sterile manufacturing processes.

None of this is possible with a stock bag.

Additives and specialist properties

We offer a comprehensive list of additives that can be blended into the polythene, to give it specific properties. UV inhibitors for outdoor use, antistatic agents for electronics, flame retardants for construction, cold resistant blends for frozen goods… We can do anything you need.

We can also manufacture custom gussets and bags with a lip, or any other format you need.

Traceability and compliance

For industries like food, medical, and aerospace, traceability matters. You need to know where your packaging came from, what it’s made of, and that it meets the relevant standards. Custom manufacturing gives you that traceability. We control our production line, so we know exactly what went into your bags and when.

So which should you choose?

If you’re packaging simple, low risk items in low volumes, and you don’t need anything special in terms of performance, print, or compliance, then stock heavy duty polythene bags might be perfectly adequate. There’s no shame in that!

But if your product needs the bag to perform in a specific way, bespoke is absolutely the better choice. It fits better, performs better, and often costs less in the long run because you’re not overspecifying or wasting material.

At NPF Packaging, we make everything to order. That means we can give you exactly what you need – in exactly the right gauge, with exactly the right additives and printing. For businesses that need packaging to work properly, it’s the right option. And we’re fast, too, with turnaround times as low as 48 hours. We’re based in the UK, simplifying your delivery and making the whole process much simpler.
